Minster, Ohio Greenville Junior High School 8th grader Christal Smith took home the First Place Trophy Saturday, March 26, after competing at the Power of the Pen regional contest held in Minster, Ohio. Twenty-eight (28) schools from nine counties and seventy eight (78) 8th grade students vied for the title. Smith qualified for the regional tournament after placing third in the District Tournament held in Greenville, Ohio on January 8, where she competed against 82 students from 15 schools. Smith advances to the State Finals to be held on May 26-27 at the College of Wooster.
Power of the Pen is an interscholastic program in written expression designed for young writers in the 7th and 8th grade levels. The competition promotes a holistic evaluation of the written work using the following categories: creativity, voice or unity, structure of ideas, figurative or descriptive language, sentence structure, mechanics and spelling.
L- Coaching Smith is an older peer, Elizabeth Horner, an 11th grade student of Greenville Senior High. Mid – Kelly Snyder, placed 6th and R-Hannah Cloyd placed 13th. Both students are from De Colores Montessori School of Greenville. Not pictured are other Darke County students who placed: Morgan Tupen, 17th placed and Caroline Praker, 18th placed, from Versailles Middle School. All of these eight graders will advance to the State Finals
