>Dr. Harry G. Thomas scholarships awarded

The Darke County Historical Society administers the Dr. Harry G. Thomas Scholarship, established by Lowell Thomas and his sister, Pherbia Thomas Thornburg in honor of their father. The interest earned by this fund is awarded to Darke County high school graduates who have been accepted to medical school. During the past 35 years over $100,000 has been awarded.

Lowell Thomas’ father, Dr. Harry G. Thomas, graduated from the University of Cincinnati Medical School. He also served in British hospitals during WWI serving as a Colonel in General Pershing’s Army. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He and Mrs. Thomas were both descendants of Darke County Pioneers.
The 2010 recipients for this scholarship are: J. Wes Halderman, Franklin Monroe High School and a fourth year medical student at Ohio State; Sherry Adkins, Arcanum High School, and a fourth year student at the Boonshoft School of Medicine, Wright State University ; and Katie Raffel, Greenville High School, and a student at Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago.
