>For general discussion: the disastrous detour situation in Arcanum

>DarkeJournal facebook fan E.R. has complained about the detour situation in Arcanum noting “we have to drive all over god’s green earth to just get to the other side of town.” E.R. is not the first person to make this comment, as the progress that continues in Arcanum is seeming to wear on everyone’s nerves. Below you can see the main drag cut off right in front of Sutton’s. Further comments?

    >I can't imagine being a business on the North Side of town like Picnics or Suttons, as there business is surely suffering! The Police Department has been less than helpful during the disasterous situation, as there are no clear signs for the detour to get to the North Side of town and they are constantly stopping and yelling at unknowingly "trespassers" on the supposed closed streets.

    >Yeah they do not seem to be working too quickly… When is it supposed to be finished?

    >Just like the leadership in Arcanum. There is no clear path to anywhere.

    >Over the weekend, the "closed" main street was open, but Monday, It was closed again, including the street to picnics from Main and Suttons Entrance! Customers had to use the One Way Drive for the previous location of 2nd National's ATM machine. Finally I noticed today, there are detour signs that actually lead to somewhere! You are detoured through the park. What a MESS!! I know the work needs done, but it seems, they are not planning the traffice flow at all. I hope the business such as Suttons and Picnics are getting extra business from the school as well as the sewer construction workers.

    >why is everyone complaining? I live in town and have to drive from the south side to the north side to go to work everyday. So you have to drive around thru the nice park or "around the block". They could shut it off completely and make you drive outside of town around the country block. Just leave 5 minutes earlier. I can think of alot worse things to complain about. Trust me, if someone needs to get to Suttons, the construction company will find a way for you to get there. I just went there yesterday at 8:30am and they sent me down the old ATM drive. My weekly grocery shopping there has not changed nor has our weekly "order out night" at Picnics changed. Also, why does everyone want it done now, progress takes time. As my father always said, "do it right the first time, and you don't have to do it a second time". Hurried and sloppy work will just cost us more money.

    >Don't know an official date but the way it is going I would say – about the same time the Greenville square is finished, when is that going to be finished, 2011???

    >Have a little patience people! It's not like they are sending you miles out of the way!!! I know it probably doesn't help the businesses right now along the construction route but it is only temporary.

    >There are 4 open Village Council seats open this coming election. Who is willing to step up and provice clear direction?

    >If the street was supposedly closed, why did you take that route? What does road closed mean? The police are not in charge of the detour. ODOT is. ODOTS detour is for traffic to "go out and around not through town". Anyone noticed the amount of rain we have received this year. Anyone notice that the streets that were gravel now have temporary pavement to eliminate the dust. They opened Main over the weekend to try and help the situation, but I guess they should have just left it closed because it caused so much confusion.

    >Seriously? All these complaints? Perhaps you'd have been happier if the street was left alone. Street construction takes time and it's going to be inconvenient. Patience! For most of the summer an entire street or major section of a longer street is shut down in Versailles for complete reconstruction. Despite the inconvenience, the residents don't complain. Actually, they willing renew a 1/2% street improvement income tax levy time after time, on top of the 1% general city income tax.It is just a personal observation, but Arcanum often seems to give the impression of being anti-progressive (at least moreso than any other Darke County community).

    >We are a bunch of spoiled brats. Go live in Dayton or even a larger city Im sure the complaining would stop. At least they are making improvements.

    >The work on Main St. is an EPA mandated separation of the storm and sanitary sewers. The village either had to do this or face stiff fines from EPA. The work will hopefully be done by the time school starts. But, sorry for the minor inconvenience that some of you seem to suffer. Get a grip! Why don't you concentrate of something that is really important like filling the 3 council seats that will be up for election with progressive- thinking people who will move Arcanum in the right direction! It seems like everytime Arcanum tries to do something to improve itself, all we hear is belly-aching. WAH! WAH! WAH! — get over it, already.
